Seton Catholic junior and cross country standout, Jenna Barker will embark on history this weekend. Jenna is just one of several Indiana torchbearers as the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay travels through Wayne County.
The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay was designed to inspire and unify Hoosiers as one of the major commemorative events of the 2016 Bicentennial celebration. The Torch Relay began in Corydon, the state’s first capital, and will culminate in Indianapolis on the Statehouse Grounds. The journey is a total of 3,200 miles across the state traveling through 92 counties.
You can find Jenna carrying the torch on Sunday, September 25
th from approximately 12:10-12:20 pm on North 27. She will take possession of the torch at Pleasant Plain Road, running south to Timothy Drive.
Being a torchbearer on the relay has come with many exciting moments! The highlight for Jenna leading up to the actual relay has been meeting IU basketball legend, Kent Benson. She met him at the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay meeting in early August. Benson is a torchbearer in the Henry County leg of the journey. Not only gracious enough to pose for photos with her, but he instantly took off his 1976 NCAA championship ring and put it on her finger saying, "get a close-up photo of her wearing this!”
“It is an honor to be carrying the torch and I am proud to be representing the youth of Wayne County,” said Barker.
