In 2014 it was estimated that 1,665,540 new cancer cases were diagnosed and 585,720 deaths were caused by cancer in the US. Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. Everyone is affected by cancer in some way. Whether it is a family member, a neighbor or a teacher, everyone knows someone that has or had cancer.
Third grade student, Bess Scheiben wanted to help! Earlier this year Bess decided that once her hair was long enough, she would give her hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.
Pamela Waters, Bess’ grandma said, “We have our hair trimmed at Personal Touch. Sherry Love is the owner and we became aware of Locks of Love through conversations with her. Kate (aunt) cut her hair for this when she was younger, and so did Tess (mom).” Bess told her hairstylist and her grandma, "I want to help the kids who have cancer and lose their hair.”
Like most of us, cancer has touched Bess’ family as well. Her great-grandmother, Jean German, died from lung cancer unexpectedly. She had never smoked a day in her life, but she had been exposed to secondhand smoke growing up.
“I think that seeing and hearing about children who have been ill has made Bess the most aware. I was really proud of her that she wanted to make this sacrifice,” added Waters.
